Is Microsoft Copilot Safe for Kids?
Microsoft Copilot requires 13+, and higher in some countries. Our own recommendation is 13+, ideally through a school account. Reasonable at 13+, and the school route is one of the better-governed paths available because an administrator has to switch it on deliberately. On a personal account the same caveat as every general chatbot applies: it is confident when it is wrong, and that matters more for homework than content filtering does.

What is Microsoft Copilot?
Microsoft’s assistant across Windows, Edge, Bing and Microsoft 365. For a student it most often shows up inside Word and the browser rather than as a destination.
What do under-18s actually get on Microsoft Copilot?
For younger users Copilot adds extra protections, tailoring responses on sensitive topics such as mental health, substance use and adult content. In schools, Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is available to students aged 13+ but only once an administrator explicitly enables it — students under 13 are not eligible, and access is off until the school turns it on.
What parental controls does Microsoft Copilot have?
Microsoft publishes dedicated age-limit and parental-control guidance, and access can be managed through family safety settings and, in schools, by the tenant administrator.

What should parents know?
- •A school-enabled account is meaningfully better governed than a personal one — ask whether your school has enabled it.
- •Under-13s are not eligible in education tenants; there is no supervised route below that.
- •It is embedded in Windows and Edge, so a child may use it without installing anything.
- •Sensitive-topic handling is adjusted for younger users, but is not a substitute for supervision.
