Is Claude Safe for Kids?
Claude requires 18+ — the strictest age floor of the major chatbots. Our own recommendation is 18+. Not for children, by the vendor’s own rule. Worth knowing precisely because it is a common point of confusion: parents assume every major chatbot is 13+, and this one is not. If a teenager needs an AI assistant for schoolwork, use one whose terms actually permit their age.

What is Claude?
A general-purpose AI assistant known for long-form writing and analysis. Capable, and explicitly built for adults.
What do under-18s actually get on Claude?
There is no under-18 experience. Anthropic’s consumer terms require users to be at least 18, and the company runs age assurance: where signals suggest a user may be a minor, it asks them to verify, and it disables accounts on indicators of minor use. Verification can be completed through the third-party service Yoti.
What parental controls does Claude have?
None, because the product is not intended for minors at all.

What should parents know?
- •This is the clearest example of why “it’s a well-known AI company” tells you nothing about the age rule.
- •Accounts showing signals of minor use can be disabled, so a child’s work could disappear with the account.
- •A teenager may encounter Claude through a third-party app or school tool where different terms apply — the 18+ rule is about Anthropic’s own consumer product.
Is there a safer alternative?
Google Gemini on a school account, or supervised ChatGPT. Both permit 13+ with a teen-specific configuration, so a student is not using the tool against its terms.
