Is Google Gemini Safe for Kids?

Google Gemini requires 13+ on a personal or school Google account; 18+ on a work account. Our own recommendation is Under 13 only via Family Link; 13+ with agreed rules. The Family Link route makes this one of the more manageable options for a supervised under-13, and 13+ on a school account is reasonable. The trade-off is reach — because it is woven into Search and Android, casual unsupervised use is easier than with a standalone app.

What is Google Gemini?

Google’s general-purpose AI assistant, integrated with Search, Workspace and Android. Its integration is the point: it shows up where a child already works.

What do under-18s actually get on Google Gemini?

Users aged 13–18 get the Gemini Teen Experience, a distinct configuration from the adult product. Children under 13 can sign in to the Gemini app where a parent manages the account through Family Link, and the parent can turn that access on or off.

What parental controls does Google Gemini have?

Family Link gives genuine parent-side control for under-13s, including switching Gemini access on or off. This is stronger than most competitors offer.

What should parents know?

  • In the EEA, Switzerland and the UK a Google AI plan requires 18+, so the age floor is regional.
  • Family Link control for under-13s is real and worth configuring deliberately rather than leaving default.
  • Because it is inside Search and Android, a child may use it without thinking of it as “using an AI tool”.
  • Check Gemini Apps Activity settings — data retention is configurable and worth setting on purpose.
