Is Meta AI Safe for Kids?
Meta AI requires 13+, matching the minimum age across Meta’s platforms. Our own recommendation is 16+, with AI character chats switched off below that. Meta has moved faster than most on teen protections, and the parent-facing self-harm alerting is genuinely ahead of the field. The residual problem is unchanged: a chatbot living inside a social app is met casually, not deliberately, and topic-level insight is not the same as seeing what was said. Turn off AI character chats unless there is a reason not to.

What is Meta AI?
Meta’s assistant, embedded directly in the messaging apps children already use. That embedding is the whole issue: it is not a tool a child chooses to open, it is simply present.
What do under-18s actually get on Meta AI?
Meta AI appears inside Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Facebook rather than as a separate app. Since 2025 Meta has used AI age-estimation from account activity, profile data and photos to place suspected teens into Teen Account protections automatically, and 13+ content settings roll out to Teen Accounts by default. In July 2026 Meta began alerting supervising parents when a teen’s conversation with Meta AI contains language suggesting self-harm or suicide, showing the teen crisis resources at the same time.
What parental controls does Meta AI have?
Parents can turn off a teen’s one-on-one chats with AI characters entirely, and can see the topics their teen discusses with AI characters — topic-level insight, not full transcripts. The self-harm alerting is automatic for supervised teens aged 13–18.

What should parents know?
- •You can disable one-on-one AI character chats — most parents do not know this setting exists.
- •You see topics discussed, not transcripts. Treat it as a conversation starter, not oversight.
- •The self-harm alert for supervised teens is real and automatic, and is a genuine reason to enable supervision.
- •Because it lives inside Instagram and WhatsApp, blocking a separate app achieves nothing.
