Is Duolingo Safe for Kids?
Duolingo requires 13+ for a standard account; under-13s need a parent’s email for consent. Our own recommendation is Any school age; use Duolingo ABC under 8. Among the lowest-risk tools here — the AI is bounded to language practice rather than open-ended conversation. The thing to check is the birth year on the account: the COPPA protections that strip social features only apply if the child’s real age was entered, and nothing verifies it.

What is Duolingo?
A gamified language-learning app that has added AI-driven conversation practice and explanations in its higher tiers.
What do under-18s actually get on Duolingo?
Under-13s are not locked out: they supply a parent’s email address for consent, and their accounts lose social features such as leaderboards and adding friends under COPPA. Duolingo does not verify age, so a child entering the wrong birth year ends up with a full standard account including those social features. Duolingo ABC is the separate product aimed at younger children.
What parental controls does Duolingo have?
The consent email and the COPPA social-feature restrictions are the main mechanisms. There is no rich parent dashboard.

What should parents know?
- •Check the birth year on your child’s account — an incorrect one silently removes the under-13 protections.
- •Under-13 accounts lose leaderboards and friends, which is a feature rather than a bug.
- •Duolingo ABC is the appropriate product for early readers.
- •The AI conversation features sit in the paid tiers, not the free one.
