1. Translate it back

Ages 7–14 · about 20 minutes

You need: A device with a translation app

  1. Write a sentence containing a joke, an idiom or a name.
  2. Translate it into another language, then back into English.
  3. Compare the round trip against the original.
  4. Repeat with a plain factual sentence and note which survives better.
It worked if: The child can explain why the idiom broke and the plain sentence did not.

What went wrong / what surprised us:

2. Break the sentiment detector

Ages 10–18 · about 35 minutes

You need: A laptop and any sentiment demo

  1. Feed it five clearly positive and five clearly negative sentences; confirm it is right.
  2. Now write sarcasm — "great, another Monday".
  3. Try slang, mixed feelings, and a sentence in a dialect the learner speaks.
  4. Log every case it got wrong and look for the pattern.
It worked if: The learner can state a category of language the system reliably fails on, with their own examples.

3. Whose language does it work for?

Ages 12–18 · about 45 minutes

You need: Internet access; ideally a second language spoken at home

  1. Run the same passage through translation in a widely-spoken language and a less-resourced one.
  2. Rate both for accuracy — a family member who speaks it is the better judge than the learner.
  3. Look up roughly how much text exists online in each language.
  4. Write two sentences connecting the amount of training text to the quality gap.
It worked if: The learner can link a technical constraint to a real inequality in who these tools serve.

What went wrong / what surprised us:

A note on tools: everything recommended for ages 13–18 is free and runs in a browser. If a product asks you to pay before your child can finish an activity, there is almost always a free equivalent.
