Print this and work through one activity at a time. Each one ends with something you can check, so you can tell whether the idea actually landed rather than guessing.

1. Human next-word game

Ages 5–10 · about 15 minutes

You need: Paper and two or more people

One person writes the first three words of a story.
Pass it on; the next person adds only one word, then folds it so only the last few words show.
Keep going for twenty words.
Read the result out loud and ask whether anyone planned it.

It worked if: The child can explain that a sentence can be built one word at a time with nobody knowing the ending in advance.

What went wrong / what surprised us:

2. Same prompt, five ways

Ages 9–16 · about 30 minutes

You need: A laptop and one approved generative tool

Write one prompt and record the output.
Rewrite the same request five different ways — shorter, more specific, with an audience, with a constraint, with an example.
Line the five outputs up next to each other.
Mark which changes actually improved it and which just changed it.

It worked if: The learner can point to a specific wording change and say what it did to the output.

What went wrong / what surprised us:

3. Fact-check the confident answer

Ages 11–18 · about 40 minutes

You need: A laptop, an approved tool, and access to a library or reliable sources

Ask it something factual in an area the learner knows well, then something in an area they do not.
Ask it for sources for both.
Try to find each source independently.
Record which existed, which did not, and which existed but did not say what was claimed.

It worked if: The learner has personally caught at least one fabricated or misattributed source.

What went wrong / what surprised us:

A note on tools: everything recommended for ages 6–12 is free and runs in a browser. If a product asks you to pay before your child can finish an activity, there is almost always a free equivalent.
