Computer Vision for Elementary Students

Print this and work through one activity at a time. Each one ends with something you can check, so you can tell whether the idea actually landed rather than guessing.
1. Become the camera
Ages 3–7 · about 10 minutes
You need: A cardboard tube or rolled paper
- Have the child look at the room through the tube and describe only what fits in the circle.
- Move the tube and ask what happened to the thing they just described.
- Ask whether the sofa stopped existing when it left the circle.

2. Pixel grid on graph paper
Ages 5–10 · about 20 minutes
You need: Graph paper and two coloured pencils
- Fill in squares to draw a simple shape — a heart or a letter.
- Read the grid out loud row by row as "filled, empty, filled".
- Have a second person redraw the shape from the read-out alone.
What went wrong / what surprised us:
3. Break a classifier on purpose
Ages 8–15 · about 35 minutes
You need: A laptop with a webcam, Teachable Machine
- Train a classifier to tell two of the child's toys apart.
- Test it in a different room, under different light, at a different distance.
- Log every condition that caused a wrong answer.
- Retrain covering those conditions and re-measure.
What went wrong / what surprised us:
A note on tools: everything recommended for ages 6–11, roughly grades 1–5 is free and runs in a browser. If a product asks you to pay before your child can finish an activity, there is almost always a free equivalent.
